Social media is an important tool for public radio newsrooms to report news and engage with growing audiences. But as the emotional intensity of our country’s political and social issues continues to rise, reporters and station employees find themselves in a difficult place. When is it appropriate to passionately weigh in on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and when is it not?
The Culture or Journalism team will tackle social media ethics in a webinar on Thursday October 18 at 12:30 p.m. EST.
Terry Gildea, PRNDI’s Executive Director and Mark Memmott, NPR’s Supervising Editor of Standards and Practices will unpack this topic.
This is the first in a series of webinars the Culture of Journalism team will present over the coming months. The group, which includes representatives from PRNDI, NPR, PRX and public radio member stations, has been working together to forge a common set of standards and practices for content produced across the public media system. Recently the last of five surveys was sent to newsroom leaders with the goal of gathering information to identify both strengths and weaknesses in the system. The surveys covered five areas: ethics, managing talent, station leadership, daily journalism practices and public perception of content.
Memmott and Gildea will draw on data gathered from the survey on ethics for the webinar. They’ll present scenarios that stations are facing and talk about how to navigate difficult situations as reporters and station staff try finding the right balance between their personal and professional approaches to social media. They will also discuss how a station code of ethics can play a positive role.
