Earlier this month, PRNDI board members and staff gathered in Washington, DC for the organization’s annual meeting. The board met for three full days to consider all PRNDI business, and spent considerable time on conference planning.
This year, the PRNDI conference will be held at the Grand Hyatt in downtown Washington, DC. Board and staff members participated in a site visit of the hotel, which is located in the heart of downtown Washington between two major Metro stops and a short distance from the National Mall.
They also visited NPR headquarters and member station WAMU to discuss partnership opportunities. Then the board retreated to a house in Northern Virginia to focus on strategic planning and programming the conference. PRNDI will offer a number of pre-conference training programs on the Wednesday and Thursday leading up to the conference. For the fifth consecutive year, Judith Smelser and Michael Marcotte will lead PRNDI’s two-day News Manger Training certificate program. Plans are in the works to also offer a two-day Editor Training Workshop for the third consecutive year. The board is working on several one day pre-conference training options as well.
Sessions are being planned in regional sharing and collaborations, digital and visual tools, sound mixing and editing and talk show training. Editor office hours will also return to the 2019 conference. In these one on one appointments with editors, participants will have access to work out specific issues and problems. When building sessions and conference content, the board decided it wants each session and training to embody values of digital, listening, inclusiveness and diversity.
PRNDI members can expect to consider several possible changes to the organization’s bylaws at the business meeting as well as a name change to the organization that was set in motion last summer. Those proposed changes will be announced several months before the conference. Elections will also be held for several board seats.
The PRNDI Board and staff are excited to work with NPR, WAMU, PRX and other sponsors to put together another fantastic conference in 2019.
