For almost two years now, President Trump and members of his administration have chosen to vilify journalists for doing their jobs. The President has on several occasions branded journalists “the enemy of the people,” and labeled their accurate and ethical work “fake news.” The ongoing rhetoric has launched a dangerous trend in our country where the work, credibility and even the physical safety of journalists are being threatened. It is harmful not just to journalists, but to the public as well; it threatens the public’s right to be well-informed citizens.
The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees the American people a free and uninhibited press. It’s a cornerstone of a healthy democracy that enables journalists to serve the public by checking power and keeping government officials accountable.
Public Radio News Directors Incorporated (PRNDI) represents hundreds of news managers, editors, producers and reporters in public media who work everyday to keep our audiences informed by telling the truth for a living. PRNDI stands with the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) along with public radio stations, newspapers and other news outlets throughout the country in this campaign defending press freedom.
PRNDI members will continue to defend the ability of journalists to tell the truth, and the public’s right to know the truth. We ask you to support us, and all of the journalists who face heightened adversity as we do our jobs in the midst of growing hostility.
