Charles Compton

At-Large Representative

Charles Compton is a 30 year veteran of public radio, who has been news director at WEKU for six years, has won numerous awards for investigative journalism, soft features, science reporting, and newscasts from the Associated Press, the Society of Professional Journalists and Public Radio News Directors, Inc.

As a student-reporter, he was at work at a public radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio when NPR introduced “Morning Editon” to the world.  He has since reported for public radio stations in Alaska, Idaho and Washington State.  However, much of his career has been in Kentucky where he has reported at four public radio stations.

In 1997, Charles helped launch Kentucky Public Radio’s story exchange, and chaired the KPR Editorial Board when it established a state house bureau in Frankfort.  He now represents mid-sized newsrooms on the PRNDI Board of Directors.

PRNDI Joins Dispute over Open Records Request

WUKY Reporter Brenna Angel's open records request has resulted in a legal stalement with the University of Kentucky.

Joining with journalistic organizations like RTDNA and SPJ, the PRNDI Board has called upon the University of Kentucky to release documents requested under the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s Open Records Laws. The records were requested by the University’s public radio station, as part of an investigation into the competency of care provided by the Pediatric and Congenital Heart Program at UK Healthcare.  The program was shut down last year by UK Healthcare and patients referred to out of state providers.

Rock On! In June 2013, It's Cleveland...

PlayhouseSquare, home to ideastream, will be the venue of PRNDI's 2013 annual conference.

In recent years, annual conferences have been enhanced through collaborations with public radio broadcasters in host cities.  NPR has always given PRNDI a warm welcome when conferences are conducted in Washington DC.  In 2010, pubcasters in Kentucky provided conference goers with an evening of horse racing at Churchill Downs.  This year, colleagues at KUHF in Houston made numerous contributions, including a reception and an evening of baseball at Minute Maid Park. In 2013, PRNDI embarks on its deepest conference collaboration to date.
